  BENİM ADAMIM

Bir bacağı kesikti.
Çok efendi bir yüzü, tipi vardı.

Dilenmezdi.

Uludağ’ın eteklerinde ki
Gece kondusundan
Hergün şehre inerdi
Bir bacağı ve iki bastonuyla.

Ben ilk okuldaydım.

Bizim evin yanında ki
Caddeden geçerdi.

Bizim sokağın başına
Gelince kaldırımın köşesine
Oturur, dinlenirdi.

Ve ben onu mimledim.

Yoksa o da bunun farkındamıydı
Bilmiyorum..hep aynı saatte gelirdi.

Onun geleceği saat yaklaşınca
Heyecanlanır, hemen mutfağa
Koşar..

Bacıma.. anneannemin evlatlığıydı
Annemle teyzemi büyütmüş
Şimdi sıra kuzinimle bana gelmişti.

O gün kü yemekten sıcak sıcak
Bir kaba koydurur, koşa koşa
Yanına giderdim.

Aç mı, tok mu bilmeden...
Ama ben aç olduğunu düşünürdüm.

O da bana şevkat’le bakar
‘güzel kızım, teşekkür ederim’
Derdi.

Götürdüğüm yemeği yerdi;
Onu rahatsız etmemek için
Yanından çekilirdim...
Rahat, rahat yemesi için.

O adamı seviyordum ..nedense.
Ve her gün yolunu bekliyordum.

İş edinmiştim: Onu doyurmayı.

Aslında onurlu adamdı..
Utanarak, zorlanarak alırdı
Her seferinde yemeği.

Bazen tok’um der
Almak istemezdi.
Ama ben aç olduğunu bilirdim..

Bu ne kadar sürdü ..
Hatırlamıyorum..

Sanıyorum
Galiba önce arayı açtı
Her gün gelmemeye başladı.

Bir müddet sonra da..
Hiç gelmemeye...

Yolunu çok bekledim.

O artık yoktu..

ÖLDÜ diye evde
Ağlaya ağlaya bir hal oldum.

Anneannem beni yatıştırmaya çalışmış,
Ölmemiştir...yoruluyordur artık her gün
Aşağı inmeye..
Yaşadığı yerde ona yiyecek veriyorlardır...
Diye diye... beni sakinleştirmişti.

O adamı da hiç unutmadım.
Hep sevdim.

Onu seven bir kız çocuğu vardı.

Ama o kaçmıştı.

Sonradan bazıları gibi.

Bazen insan sevgiden de kaçıyor..
Demek ki.!
Aslında hepimiz yapmadık mı?
Boğuyor mu fazla sevgi...???
Yoruyor mu.. Didişmeleri.??

Yıllar sonra
Şile’de onun gibi bir yalnız
İhtiyar balıkçı
Buldum.

Dalgaların içinde
Bir baraka’da yaşayan...
                            buz gibi

Şimdi onu besliyorum.

Ona da sıcak, taze yemek
Götürüyorum;

Bir de kendi yaptığım
İncir reçeli, şeftali reçeli.,
Vişne reçeli....
Hiç olmazsa reçel yer
Birşey bulamazsa...

Onun kaçacak yeri de yok...!

Bazen arayı ben açıyorum...
Zaten kışları orada değilim.

Evim orada..
Dalgalarım, martılarım orada
Ve sevdiğim kimileri...

MY MAN

One leg was missing
But his face and manner
Were genteel.

He could not beg.

Each day he left his shack
On Ulu Mountain’s skirts
To go down to the town
On one leg and two sticks,

I was at primary school.

Crossing the avenue,
He used to pass our house.
At the top of our street
He would sit down to rest
Upon the roadside kerb.

I marked down what he did.

I don’t know if he knew this-
He still came at the same hour.

His time to come drew near
And I would run, excited,
To the kitchen…

To my nurse- adopted by my grandma
She brought up both my mother and my aunt
My cousin and myself were next in line.

The hot food they had cooked that day
Was put into a dish which I then took
And carried to him, running all the way.

Heedless of whether he was full or not,
I always thought of him as being hungry

He used to look at me with kindness
And say, "Well, thanks, my pretty girl."

He ate the food I took him, and,
So he could eat his meal in comfort,
I’d leave him on his own.

I loved that man, no reason why,
And waited for his coming every day.

I’d found myself a job: To keep him fed.

In fact, he was a man of principle,
Embarrassed and shamefaced,
He took the food I brought him every day.

Sometimes he’d say, "I’m full,"
And take my offering unwillingly,
But I knew better- he was starving.

How long this went on,
I do not remember.

I suppose there must have been
Some intervals, and gradually
He left off coming every day.
A little later on,
He did not come at all.

I waited for his coming a long time.

But he was gone.

“He’s dead.” I thought and, weeping,
Was quite overcome with grief,

My grandma tried to comfort:
"No, he isn’t dead,
He’s just got tired and no longer
Comes down every day.
The people where he lives
Will give him food,"
She’d say, and calm me down.

I never could forget that man
I’d always loved

There was a girl who loved him.

But he had run away

As others later on would do.

At times one wants to flee
From being loved.
Isn’t it something
Each of us has done?
We drown in excess love;
It tires us, doesn’t it.
That endless fuss?

Years later
I found an aged fisherman
Alone like him, in Sile,
His home an icy shack
Amidst the waves.

Now it is him I feed.

It is to him I take
Hot, fresh-cooked food;

And, sometimes, jam I make myself,
Fig, peach and cherry jam.
If he can find no other food,
He can, at least, eat jam.
He has no place to flee to,
But at times I give him space.
In any case, I don’t spend winters there.

My house is there…
My waves, my gulls are there
As well as people whom I love.
